Hurricane noise
A minor hurricane churning up the coast causes a low vibration in the atmosphere. That vibration resonates with the wind and waves to be sure but also with the local population. On July 3rd and 4th hurricane Arthur made its way up the east coast from off the Florida coast. We heard about it of course but no one was too worried and no one was taking any drastic measures even on July 3....that is until later in the day. Shop keeps were tuned to the local weather radio and listened intently to the storm forecasts not so much to decide about evacuation but more to fret about what for them is the busiest commerce day of the year. Christmas pales in comparison to the Fourth of July in the Cape Fear region as far as business goes. Its high season, the rentals are full and the area's daily population jumps from 6,500 to 50,000 people. Its is impossible to go anywhere in the area due to the overloaded roads. An evacuation on this weekend would be just about impossible. Still as late as noon on the third is was business as usual. The wind picked up maybe a bit, it started raining and slowly things started to shut down. the grocery store was busy but not selling batteries or water instead people were buying chickens and burgers for the next days barbeque. A wild rumor circulated that the Islands two bridges would be shut down in the late afternoon. Thursday night the surf was high and it was a bit blustery....flights were cancelled. Friday morning dawned bright and sunny, couple of branches in the yard, flights resumed and that was that. The fourth of July came just as Christmas did after the grinch...business as usual. The hurricane buzz was replaced by the sound of nonstop booms and bangs....happy birthday America!
